Arsenal Football Academy has an elite football development programme based at London Colney and Hale End, offering full time academics and football training for elite youth players.
The aim of The Academy is to centre each boy's progression as a footballer by providing a World Leading Youth Development programme. By placing players at the heart of the programme the aim is to develop and grow future Premier League players in an environment which is challenging, developmental and inspirational.
The Medical team are a key part of The Academy and is supported by a fully integrated team of medical personnel including doctors, physiotherapists, sports science and strength & conditioning staff.
The role is to cover for a fixed time period for a current staff member's maternity leave. Based at Hale End and reporting to the Lead Academy Physiotherapist and Head of Sport Medicine & Athletic Development (SM & AD) the Academy Physiotherapist (Hale End) will be responsible for the screening, monitoring and assessment of all academy players combined with an expert level of assessment, treatment and the rehabilitation of all injured players aged 8 years to 16 years registered to the Arsenal Academy. To function and contribute to a world class level of Multidiscipline Team working to ensure the best level of care and treatment of all Academy players.
To liaise with the Lead Academy Physiotherapist and Head of SM & AD, Academy coaches and any other relevant Academy personnel and report on injuries and rehabilitation progress of all Academy players aged 8 to 16 years
To undertake match day duties, primarily Saturdays and Sundays, or any other days when Academy games are being played
To hold and maintain up to date pitch side emergency first aid qualifications in accordance with Premier League guidelines (FA Intermediate or AREA)
To be in attendance at all Academy training sessions as determined by the Lead Academy Physiotherapist / Head of SM & AD
To ensure the Arsenal Athletic Development Pathway is implemented to the best of their abilities
To maintain discipline as set out in the Arsenal Football Club Code of Conduct (Players, Parents and Coaches)
To implement an expert level rehabilitation programmes for all injured players
To organise and manage physiotherapy cover for all academy games and training sessions, where the job holder is unable to attend personally
To oversee and take an active part in the professional development of all medical personnel fulfilling Academy duties
To attend weekly clinics held by the Academy doctor on designated days/evenings
To assist in the designing, implementing, assessing and managing the Academy physical screening and injury prevention programme
To maintain continuous professional development (CPD) through the comprehensive internal CPD programme and any other relevant external CPD courses
To demonstrate expert level of manual handling that is safe and effective in assessing, treating and rehabilitating Academy Players
To maintain comprehensive medical records on the Academy computerised medical database in accordance with Premier League, CSP and HCPC requirements
Demonstrate and produce detailed and expert level of clinical notes for all fit and injured players at the Academy
Demonstrate and maintain expert level of communication skills with all key stake holders that are involved in the care of all the Academy players
To attend external clinics, consultant appointments, surgery and any other appointments that are deemed relevant to ensure an expert level of care and rehabilitation of the Academy player
To maintain close relationships and team working with the Academy Physiotherapists at London Colney and the Lead Strength & Conditioning coach at Hale End, so that a comprehensive approach can be taken to the development and rehabilitation of players both fit and injured
To organise, contribute and participate within workshops that educate and inform the players and parents on all relevant medical and sport science topics
To attend tours / tournaments within the UK and Internationally to provide pitch side cover and physiotherapy cover throughout the duration of the tour / tournaments
To organise, manage and replenish the resources of all medical supplies for operational purposes
To record, analyse and report a comprehensive audit on all medical aspects of the job including half year and full year reports for the Lead Academy Physiotherapist / Head of SS & AD and all relevant staff as required
Under guidance from the Lead Academy Physiotherapist / Head of SS & AD, ensure that the medical functioning of Hale End complies with current EPPP guidelines
Covering training sessions / matches at London Colney on occasions where required
To maintain a clean and professional working environment within medical and physiotherapy working facility
To ensure appropriate discipline is maintained in all designated medical areas of the club
To maintain and adhere to Arsenal Football Club's Child Protection, Health, Safety and Equal Opportunity procedures
To adhere to a strict code of confidentiality in respect of any information relating to Arsenal Football Club and its operation
To undertake any other duties commensurate to the post as seen appropriate by the Lead Academy Physiotherapist / Head of SM & AD
Main Job Requirements and Person Specification
A BSc or MSc degree level qualification in Physiotherapy
A post-graduate degree qualification in the relevant field of sports medicine and performance field desirable
MCSP and HCPC Registered
Ideally have full time experience of working with elite level youth athletes
A successful and verifiable record in assessing, treating and rehabilitating injuries of youth athletes aged 8 to 16 years
A successful record of enhancing the physical development of young players aged 8 to 16 years
An extensive and up to date CPD portfolio
A valid driving licence
A valid passport
Possess an expert level of manual handling and clinical reasoning when assessing and treating injured Academy players
In-depth knowledge of typical pathologies that can present with the injured adolescent athlete and the application in managing this to ensure a safe and effective return to full competition
An in-depth knowledge and understanding of all phases of the Elite Player Performance Pathway (EPPP)
Experience and in-depth knowledge on screening, monitoring, assessing, treating and rehabilitating youth athletes
In-depth knowledge of Long Term Athletic Development
Ability to time manage and enhance the professionalism of the part time physiotherapists working at Hale End
Ability to communicate (verbal and written) with the multidiscipline team and key stake holders involved in the care of the Academy player
To be proactive and versatile in their approach in achieving successful outcomes
The ability to manage resources and information particularly medical records
A willingness to work flexibly and show a proactive approach within agreed boundaries
Understanding of Health and Safety and its application to a sporting environment
Energy and enthusiasm, with the ability to enthuse and inspire youth athletes
Excellent role model for players
Evidence of sound administrative, organisational and prioritisation skills
To be responsible for own continuous professional development
Experience of working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
The successful applicant will be required to complete a self-declaration form and an enhanced disclosure check. It is a requirement of the role that this applicant needs a clear criminal record check.
The successful applicant will also be required to attend the FA Safeguarding Children in Football workshop and other appropriate CPD events.
Hours of Work
This role requires individuals to work at such times (including on public holidays, evening, day time and weekend) and for such periods as the efficient and conscientious discharge of the duties require.
